My Squat Everyday Training Log: Average Lifter Gone Wild

Just over a year ago, I was stepping into brand-spanking-new learning territory about fitness, lifting, biology, neurochemistry, stress physiology, and training philosophy. Around that time, you might have heard me say things about "squatting every day." I had started delving into certain threads online regarding strength and conditioning, and I was exploring the … [Read more...]

The Ideal Threesome, And How to Get It: Interview with a Jacked Dude

Yes, this post is about threesomes. But not that kind. This is an interview I did awhile ago with Steve Kleva – friend, bodybuilder, powerlifter, and coach based out of Arizona.  I decided to talk to him about how to get big, lean, and strong all at the same time! And I figured my male readers would appreciate the conversation. (Not that I can't whip a man into shape as … [Read more...]

What to Do When You Can’t Squat Deep, Benching Hurts, and Deadlifts Terrify Your Back

I see you. Home alone, facing the wall in shame as a YouTube video of someone with massive lift numbers bangs out those reps and a sexy logo finishes it off as the music fades into the background. You clicked on it for some motivation, but all it reminds you of is how you can't do any of that yet. You slowly turn around, scared to see if it is done, sit back down hunched over … [Read more...]

Form, Fear, and the Squat Booty: A Woman’s Guide

Squats. My fave topic. I listen to and hear many frustrations when it comes to squatting. I work with people who squat in all kinds of strange ways with all kinds of weird body mechanics.  As I continue squatting and taking the time to really pay attention to what I (and they) do when squatting, what I think I do, and what I want to do, the insights keep piling up. … [Read more...]

Mini Insights: Pausing the Squat

So, I pick on squats alot, cause its a pretty constant learning process at this stage. But I am super happy with my progress, knees have never felt better, strength is still going up (for proper squatting my muscles are still relatively in the "newbie" stage, since I have deloaded and fixed form several times the past year, 3 to be exact). So, another "saying" I have when … [Read more...]

Mini Insights: Punch the Gut

Excessive lordosis. Now, some people might WANT more of this, but some of us have a problem with it, especially when it comes to lifting weights. Excessive lordosis is an excessive "curve" in the lower spine. Think of someone who can "stick their ass out" alot by arching their back (like me) :D That big lower back arch is nice and attractive, but not when you are … [Read more...]

Pistol Squats and More on Squat Form

Once a week, more or less, I work on bodyweight movements and gymnastic style movements. I do pistol squats regularly, and have worked up from 2 consecutive reps per leg to 11 reps per leg. My left leg could previously barely pump out a couple reps without wobbling and wiggling and falling over several months ago after re-injuring my knee, so I am pleased with my strength … [Read more...]

Helping Your Squat: Buttwink and Opening up the hips

< This is me having a boring week in my office cause its Winter Break and most of the kids are gone. Thanks to the fact that I can now video myself, I am able to give myself much better feedback and act in a better capacity as my own coach. There is nothing truer than a slowmo video to show you were stuff is going wrong. I don't look in the mirror while I train, as its not … [Read more...]
